'Complex extemps' are those which include ingredients such as tablets or capsules which are claimed by count, rather than by grams or mls.
They are treated the same as other ingredients and are claimed correctly, but can produce some unexpected figures.
Tablets in mixture.
E.g. a script which requires 40mg of Prednisone in 100ml of Syrup.
Enter this as 8 x 5mg Prednisone tablets, plus syrup to 100ml. RxOne will record and display this internally as 8% Prednisone tablets, which looks strange but is correct in computer terms since 8 units are used for every 100 units of product claimed. 'SmartClaim' will claim correctly as "8 Prednisone tablets 5mg", plus the syrup.
Tablets in capsule.
E.g. 60 capsules each containing
2 x Stemetil 5mg tabs
1 x Codcomol tab
1 x Cafergot tab
- Enter this as as shown, 2 tabs of Stemetil, one of Codcomol and Cafergot.
- For quantity enter 240, since although the product is only 60 capsules it needs to claim for 240 tablets in total in the ratio 50%:25%:25%. On entering 240 it will display '60 Stemetil, 30 Codcomol, 30 Cafergot' to confirm that it is going to claim for this.
The label will display '240' so be sure to explain to the patient that their 60 capsules contain the ingredients of 240 tablets in total, and that this number appears to enable Electronic Claiming to pay for the script correctly.
Make a note on the 'script comment' box of what has been done for ease of repeating.
Future It is expected that scripts of this type will become NSS in future, and this problem will disappear. If not then the program will be modified to make for a less confusing label.
