Extemp, Creating

[Revised Jan 11]

To create a new extemp.

1. When the 'Drug' box is highlighted during normal dispensing of a script, select the Extemp button. If any other drug details are on the screen at this time they will be deleted.

2. Select 'New'

3. Code? (Optional) 25 letters are available. It is best to avoid cryptic abbreviations. Use recognisable names

e.g. Hydrocort 1% Oint not HC1.

- If you wish to give this mixture a code for quick future selection, enter it now.

- If not, just leave the line blank which is the best option for rarely dispensed mixtures, to avoid clogging the mixture codes with rare items.

4. Mixture name? Type this in as you want it to appear on labels.

5. Drug? Type in and select an ingredient.

6. Quantity? Move to either the absolute 'quantity' or 'percentage' column and enter quantity. The last one can be left blank and will be made up to 100%.

- Fill in just one column... do not mix quantities and percentages within the same mixture.

- Specify all liquids mls, solids in grams, and tablets in counts. Do not use Litres, ug, mcg or Kg.

7. The item will be placed in the list and you will be ready for the next ingredient. Use the cursor keys to move around the drug/quantity grid and change things until you are happy with what you see.

8. From the last ingredient, press <tab> or 'Quantity' and specify the total volume of this script, so it can calculate the quantity of the last ingredient if that was left blank.

12. Accept 'Ok".

Stock control of ingredients

All ingredients are stock controlled.

Notes

1. An extemporaneous script can have any number of ingredients.

2. All ingredients must be have a stock card so that the total adds to 100%. A user could create an item named 'Unknown ingredient' to satisfy this.

3. A column displays the stockcard indication (e.g. General, Delisted, Nss etc) for each ingredient, so at a glance you can see which ingredient has been delisted
