[Revised Sep 03]
Windows uses many temporary files, some of which can are not completely erased and as they accumulate all programs running on the system gradually slow down.
'On-screen-Help' not displaying
Problems with a TMP file can cause this. Erase as below.
'Scandisk' unable to run.
If Windows scandisk comes up to say that it has restarted more then 10 times.... it is usually due to having a screensaver set which interrupts it (turn it off to run scandisk). It can also be caused by windows temp files. Solution delete the tmp files and re run the scan disk.
Msg, "Common dialogue 32 reload Windows"
Problems with a TMP file can cause the error message, "Common dialogue 32 reload Windows" message when the On-Screen-Help is printed (it will be able to be viewed on screen with no problems). If so delete the TMP files and it will not be necessary to reload Windows.
To erase temporary files.
Warning; If the DOS 'QuickScript' program is on the same computer, do not erase all the TMP files as a file names index.tmp is used by QuickScript.
1. Shut down the system and turn off to be certain that there is nothing running. Turn back on and when Windows restarts
2. Select 'start' then 'find' and
3. In the 'Named' box enter *.tmp (All run together with no spaces, don't forget the '.' Between '*' and 'tmp'). If an 'Include subfolders' box is present, it should be ticked.
4. Select 'Find now'. This can take a minute or so, and the number of files found will show just below the list. If there are only 20 or 30 the difference will be slight, but if there are thousands then a good improvement in speed is possible if they are deleted.
5. Select <alt> + <a> to highlight ALL .tmp files.
6. Press the <del> key. It will ask, 'Send these xxx files to the recycle bin ?'. Accept this. If it asays 'Access denied' on any of them it is likely that you still have some program open that is using one... Try a full shut down and restart and try again.
7. 'Scandisk' creates *.chk files with lost clusters of files. These should be occasionally delete too by repeating the process to find .chk files and delete them.
Windows requires reinstalling
Slow and erratic running can also be caused by Windows having become corrupted... Reinstalling Windows can usually be done without affecting 'RxOne'.
