Printer, Foil, Problems

Future function

[Revised Apr 02]

If a foil printer is destroying foils, the likely causes are;

1. Pushing foil. Foil is flimsy, and is best pulled through with a tractor drive rather than pushed through on friction. If having problems change to tractor. ( A separate tractor drive is needed for the OKI).

2. Friction setting. When pulling foil with a tractor, the paper drive lever must be set to tractor, not friction, or else the tractor drive will fight with the friction. Check that foil can easily be pulled even though the roller does not move, without any noticeable resistance.

3. Weight of roll Some printers tear the tractor holes if the roll is full and heavy. Run out some slack on a full roll if necessary.

4. Blocked paper path Check that there is not part of an old label blocking the foil path under the roller. Try feeding stiff paper through, or thin cloth and cleaning as much as possible. Most local computer shops can strip the printer and clean the whole path on request.

5. Paper thickness Normally set as close as possible, as the foil is very thin. However, if it tears the foil experiment with the paper thickness level
